Celebrating Black History Month
By Kim Sonafelt, Chief Executive Officer
Dear Colleagues,
Today, as we kick off Black History Month (BHM), we want to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans, while also recognizing the decades of adversity Black Americans have had to overcome to fight for equality in this country – a struggle that’s not yet over.
The Black American experience is extraordinarily multifaceted, and as we continue this journey of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, it’s important to take this opportunity to learn and celebrate the life’s work and mission of so many who have come before us.
The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.
During February we celebrate Black Americans who have paved the way and those who make history and are everyday heroes. February is also the month we acknowledge American Heart Month. Unfortunately, health care disparities still exist because of structural racism. Please join us in our wellness activities to promote heart health and overall wellness. Heart disease, cancer and stroke continue to be the leading causes of death for Black Americans.
This month is all about honoring the contributions that Black Americans have made to society – many of which have been unrealized. Explore what this month means to you and take the time to learn something new. Keep your eye out for opportunities this month to celebrate Black history. If you have thoughts on making BHM a 365-day celebration, I would like to hear more. Please reach out to me directly.
In Partnership,
Kim Sonafelt
